On Monday, September 7, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz—“a proud Trini from Tunapuna”— and Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham joined Governor David Paterson, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, former Secretary of State and parade grand marshal Colin Powell, elected officials and thousands of revelers at the 42nd Annual West Indian American Day Parade. Joining BP Markowitz and Deputy BP Graham on a float were “The King of Calypso” Mighty Sparrow and Thomas DiNapoli, New York State comptroller.
The parade traveled through the heart of Brooklyn’s Caribbean American community along Eastern Parkway, and featured the booming music, steel drums, flashy costumes, spicy food and lively atmosphere that are the trademark of the annual carnival.
Brooklyn is proud to be the “Caribbean American Capital of America.” |
