On Friday, June 5, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Albertine van Vliet-Kuiper, the mayor of Amersfoort in the Netherlands, shared greetings via Skype as part of the “Anytime Project” celebrating Amersfoort’s 750th birthday. 2009 also marks the 400th anniversary of the Dutch arrival in New York. Also participating was Hugo Gajus Scheltema, Consul General of the Netherlands in New York.
The Anytime Project is a digital “exchange program’ between the city of Amersfoort and Brooklynites, including the Amersfort School (PS 119) and the Brooklyn College Community Partnership. The original name for the Flatlands section of Brooklyn was Nieuw Amersfoort and there is an Amersfort Park in Mill Basin.
As part of the project, photography by artists Yusaf Sayman and Chantal Spieard is on display in the Community Room at Brooklyn Borough Hall.
Tulips will also be planted at Borough Hall this October to celebrate the friendship between New York City and the Netherlands.
