BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL NAMED OFFICIAL “OPERATION BACKPACK” DROP OFF LOCATION, JULY 27 – AUGUST 11

Beginning Monday, July 27 and through Tuesday, August 11, Brooklyn Borough Hall will be an official drop off location for the eighth year of the Volunteers of America’s Operation Backpack, a citywide campaign that provides thousands of children living in the New York City shelter system with new, filled backpacks. Last year, 7,000 backpacks complete with grade-appropriate school supplies were distributed to youngsters living in more than 70 shelters and social service programs, including more than 3,300 students in Brooklyn alone.

According to Volunteers of America, one of the most devastating consequences of homelessness is the impact it has on a child’s education. Research shows that as many as 62 percent of children who are homeless score below grade level in reading and 77 percent below grade level in math.

For more information on Operation Backpack and how to fill and drop off a backpack, visit the Volunteers of America website at www.operationbackpacknyc.org.
