On Tuesday, January 5, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined MTA Chairman Jay Walder, LIRR President Helena Williams, City Council Members Letitia James and Brad Lander, other elected officials and customers at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new $108 million Atlantic Terminal Pavilion transit hub in Downtown Brooklyn.
“This will be a shining beacon for travelers escaping Nassau County—aka ‘Brooklyn Near East’—and Suffolk County—aka ‘Brooklyn Far East’—and anything that brings more people to Brooklyn is a welcome addition,” said BP Markowitz. “So to Brooklyn, New York City and Long Island, I say: all aboard!”
The three-story limestone, granite and glass structure funded by the Federal Transit Administration and the MTA Long Island Railroad Capital Program features a soaring atrium that allows natural light to reach the below ground LIRR concourse and subway station. Two sweeping staircases provide direct access from the street to the concourse below. The Terminal building is linked internally to an office building and retail complex.
The hub serves more than 25,000 LIRR customers and 31,000 NYC Transit subway customers each day, and provides riders with transfers to the 2, 3, 4, 5, B, D, M, N, Q & R subway lines as well as five bus routes. |
