On Wednesday, January 13, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham joined Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Governor David Paterson, other elected officials and members of the Haitian community at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church to announce Brooklyn- and New York City-based relief efforts in the wake of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Because of conditions on the ground in Haiti, donations of equipment and supplies are not encouraged—rather, anyone who wants to assist with relief efforts should donate generously to a legitimate nonprofit or relief organization. For more information, New Yorkers can visit www.brooklyn-usa.org or call 311. The State Department has set up a hotline for people trying to reach family members in Haiti, 1-888-407-4747.
The Borough President’s Office is also working with the regional commissioner of the Social Security Administration to coordinate outreach to the Haitian community in Brooklyn and New York City to determine how Social Security can help those in Haiti who are eligible for benefits.
“Brooklyn is the ‘Caribbean Capital of America’—by some counts, we have the largest Haitian population in the United States—and our hearts go out to our Haitian brothers and sisters in need,” said BP Markowitz and Deputy BP Graham. “Brooklyn and Haiti share the common motto ‘In Unity There is Strength,’ and Brooklynites have been united once again—as we were in 2008 following a series of devastating hurricanes and a tropical storm—in opening up their hearts, wallets and pantries to the victims of this catastrophic earthquake. Our office will be working closely with the Caribbean community in the days ahead to lend support to Brooklyn and New York City-based relief efforts.” |
