BP MARKOWITZ SALUTES 70 YEARS OF PROSPECT HEIGHTS’ FAMED NEIGHBORHOOD EATERY AND MAJOR BROOKLYN TOURIST ATTRACTION “TOM’S RESTAURANT” — AS OWNERS CONSTANTIN COSTA “GUS” AND NONIE VLAHAVAS PASS THE SPATULA TO NEPHEW JIMMY KOKOTAS - BP thrilled to hear that Tom’s Restaurant will now be open on Sunday too, to accommodate its large tourist and local demand!

Brooklyn, NY—Borough President Marty Markowitz paid a recent visit to Tom’s Restaurant in Prospect Heights to thank legendary owners Constantin Costa (Gus) Vlahavas and his wife Nonie for 30 years of serving up great food. The restaurant, founded by Gus’s father, has been a staple of the neighborhood for 70 years—its breakfast and lunch platters feeding hungry masses for decades. A family business since the 1940s, when Tom Vlahavas—of blessed memory—turned what was once an ice cream parlor into the legendary Tom’s Restaurant with his son Gus at his side. Tom’s is sprinkled with back-in-the-day, old world charm, complete with egg creams and cherry-lime rickeys to go with their famous waffles that are served up all day, making each and every customer feel that they aren’t going “out to eat,” but “coming home.” Now, Tom’s Restaurant will begin a new chapter as Gus and Nonie turn it over to their nephew, Jimmy Kokotas, who will surely continue in the family-style tradition that has made Tom’s Restaurant a second home to countless Brooklynites. For an added treat, Tom’s Restaurant will now be open on Sunday, which will surely cheer foodies across the borough.
