BP MARKOWITZ TO CELEBRATE BROOKLYN PRIDE, HOST LGBT ART EXHIBIT “IDENTITIES” AT BOROUGH HALL

6:00 P.M.
THURSDAY, JUNE 11
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT AND ADAMS STREETS
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

On Thursday, June 11, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will celebrate the observance of Brooklyn Pride by honoring outstanding members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. BP Markowitz will recognize three individuals and an organization that have made strides to improve the lives of all Brooklynites: the Lesbian Herstory Archives; Scot Medbury, Brooklyn Botanic Garden; Ricky Nacipucha, Trattoria Mangia; and Tracy Hobson, Center for Anti-Violence Education. Brooklyn is proud home to the city’s largest LGBT population, and BP Markowitz has been a proud supporter of efforts to establish Brooklyn’s first-ever LGBT Center.
The night of celebration will also feature the LGBT art exhibit Identities, on display in the Borough Hall Community Room from June 11 through June 30. This new work from six Brooklyn artists—Peyrotau & Sediles, Gregg Evans, Darren Jones, Emily North and Jesus Lapuente—examines how both gender and sexuality can define a community and its individuals. Branching across the mediums of painting, drawing, photography, video and installation, they represent varied identities within the LGBT community living and working in Brooklyn.

Additional guests and entertainers include Stefon Royce; Appolonia Cruz; India. M.; Switch n’ Play; Graziella; “Tina Turner”; and Xavier-Raye.

The rainbow flag will fly at Brooklyn Borough Hall and the building will be lit in celebration of gay pride. In addition, on Saturday, June 13, BP Markowitz’s float will appear in the 13th annual Brooklyn Pride Parade, which kicks off at 7:30 pm from Prospect Park West and 15th Street (Bartel-Pritchard Square). Earlier that day, at 2:15 pm, BP Markowitz will present a proclamation to Brooklyn Pride. For more information on the day’s events, visit www.brooklynpride.org.
