BP MARKOWITZ ON CONEY ISLAND PLAN APPROVED BY CITY COUNCIL LAND USE AND ZONING COMMITTEES: APPLAUDS ADDITION OF HIS AFFORDABLE HOUSING, UNION LABOR AND PS 188 GYMNASIUM RECOMMENDATIONS

“Throughout this process, I have insisted that any Coney Island Plan ‘build with Coney, by Coney and for Coney,’ and the inclusion of three of my recommendations—the use of union labor paid with prevailing wages, no less than 35 percent affordable housing in the Coney West and Coney North districts, and a new community gymnasium at PS 188—are all victories for Brooklyn. As we move forward, it is my hope the final Coney Island Plan will include these and other recommendations I and others have called for, including a larger amusement area that remains unique, creative and iconic in its architecture, signage, lighting and preservation of appropriate buildings and amusements. I am confident that with these changes and others, Coney Island’s bright future as a year-round, affordable playground for the 21st century will be ensured.”
