BP MARKOWITZ APPOINTS GBUBEMI OKOTIEURO OF FORT GREENE AS BROOKLYN REPRESENTATIVE TO PANEL FOR EDUCATIONAL POLICY
On Monday, August 31, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz announced the appointment of Gbubemi Okotieuro of Fort Greene as the Brooklyn representative to the New York City Panel for Educational Policy.
“Over the last decade, Gbubemi has proven himself to be an exceptional advocate for public education as well as someone with a keen knowledge of the workings of city government,” said Borough President Markowitz. “As the associate dean for governmental and external relations at Medgar Evers College, he has been instrumental in the ongoing development of one of the largest institutions of higher learning geared toward African American and Caribbean American students in this country. I am confident he will be an exceptional addition to the already esteemed Panel.”
“I am grateful to Borough President Markowitz for the privilege of serving as his representative on the Panel for Educational Policy,” said Mr. Okotieuro. “I share the belief that education is the greatest and fastest way to achieve social and economic mobility.”
Mr. Okotieuro brings to the Panel his strong and diverse background in education. With an MPA from Baruch College, he has extensive experience as an educator at CUNY and as a teacher of undergraduate public policy courses at Medgar Evers and graduate courses at Queens College. In 2005, he was awarded the Outstanding Citizen Award by the Nigerian American Community Association, Inc. He is on the boards of the Sauti Yetu Center for African Women and the Women of Color Arts and Film Festival.
Mr. Okotieuro replaces Wendy Gilgeous, whom Borough President Markowitz thanked for her service to the students and families of New York City.
The Panel for Educational Policy was created to replace the former Board of Education. Each borough president appoints a member, and the remaining eight appointees include the schools chancellor and seven members selected by the mayor. The Panel is responsible for approving standards, policies, objectives and regulations directly related to educational achievement and instruction in the New York City public schools. |
