BROOKLYN BOROUGH PRESIDENT MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON SALARY INCREASES FOR NYPD

“New York’s Finest should obviously be making a salary that reflects the great risks and responsibilities of the job. I applaud the state arbitration panel for rewarding our brave men and women in blue, who work tirelessly to keep Brooklyn and the entire city safe every single day, and deal with added responsibilities such as protecting our residents from the threat of terrorism.

NYPD salaries have been deplorable for far too long—and even with this retroactive pay raise, our police officers are unfortunately still woefully underpaid compared to their suburban counterparts. That’s why we must consider all resources—including city, state, and federal funding—to keep pace with salaries in the region, maintain recruitment levels, and ensure the NYPD remains the envy of the law enforcement world.”
