BP MARKOWITZ COMMENDS NYC AND STATE AGREEMENT ON PLAN TO REACTIVATE GANSEVOORT MARINE TRANSFER STATION

I want to commend Mayor Bloomberg, whose visionary commitment to sustainability has been essential to this process—as well as Governor Paterson, Assembly Speaker Silver, Senate Majority Leader Skelos, Senator Bruno, Council Speaker Quinn, the Legislature, the City Council, and the environmental justice advocates of Brooklyn and New York City—for working together and moving to reactivate the Marine Transfer Station, which will both decrease damaging truck emissions and more fairly distribute the responsibility of the city’s waste management.

In a family, each member should expect to do a fair share of the chores. And in the city’s case, each borough must share the duties and responsibilities that come with being part of this great metropolis. When it comes to greener, more equitable solutions for our city’s environment and health, our response should not be “NIMBY”— but “YIMBY.”

This is a victory for the residents of New York City, who will reap real health benefits, as well as to our overburdened neighborhoods which will finally get the environmental justice they deserve. Bravo!
