BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON DEATH OF RUSSIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH
PATRIARCH ALEKSY II
I join Brooklyn’s Russian Orthodox community and Reverend Mercurius, Bishop of Zaraisk and Administrator of the Patriarchal Parishes in the United States, in mourning the loss of Aleksy II, patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church.
He became patriarch of the Church shortly before the fall of the Soviet Union, and saw it through a period of great upheaval. Under his guidance, the Church provided its members with an oasis of calm amid the chaos of the post-Soviet world—and he will be greatly missed.
