BP MARKOWITZ AND YVONNE GRAHAM STATEMENT ON DEATH OF AMIR ABDUL-AKBAR

“It is with profound sadness that we mourn the passing of our friend Amir Abdul-Akbar. His selfless work went well beyond the good he did here and in his home nation of Jamaica—Akbar was an international humanitarian who put the needs and concerns of others over his own. As executive director of the Caribbean American Program for Empowerment, Akbar has ensured that books, computers, medical supplies, surgical supplies, food, clothing and toys have gotten into the hands of the people who need them the most. And for those in public life, we will surely miss the e-mails Akbar sent in the middle of the night. We grieve with Akbar’s loved ones and hope they will be comforted by the prayers and thoughts of millions of Brooklynites, New Yorkers and members of the Jamaican and Caribbean communities.”
