On Thursday, October 11, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and the Borough President’s Advisory Committee on Disability Issues marked the 17th anniversary of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act and National Disability Employment Awareness Month by honoring Brooklyn employers who hire workers with disabilities.
Sixteen employers, selected from nominations submitted by individuals throughout the borough, were honored for their commitment to hiring Brooklynites with disabilities. This year’s honorees are as varied and diverse as Brooklyn: Ari Friedman Associates; ARIMED Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics; The Brooklyn Brewery; Brooklyn Public Library-Brooklyn Heights Branch; Burke Supply; Culinart at Keyspan; Kairos Expressions; Key Food on 5th Avenue in Park Slope; Direct Promotions; Kings County Hospital Center-Linen Department; Lenco Diagnostic Laboratory; Lincoln Brokerage; McDonald’s on Fulton Street; Metropolitan Jewish Geriatric Center; Rainbow Shops; and the Resource Training Center.
The Americans with Disabilities Act enables people with disabilities to participate more fully in their communities, travel more easily, gain more complete access to the goods and services and compete more effectively for jobs.
Borough President Markowitz is proud to honor Brooklyn businesses that have made the commitment to invest in individuals of all abilities so every Brooklynite might know the satisfaction of being a wage earner.
