On Saturday, June 23, and Sunday, June 24, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined music lovers at the 3rd Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival, held at Empire Fulton Ferry State Park, and this season’s first JellyNYC Pool Party concert at McCarren Park in Williamsburg.
“Everybody argues about where it all started—East Coast, West Coast, the South Bronx, Brooklyn—all I know is Brooklyn grooves to every beat on the planet — so hip hop without a little ‘Brooklyn attitude’ is definitely missing the beat!” said Borough President Markowitz at Saturday’s Hip Hop festival, which was organized by the Room Service Group and Brooklyn Bodega.
On Sunday, Borough President Markowitz introduced indie rock band Superchunk at this summer’s first JellyNYC Pool Party at McCarren Park. The Pool Party concert series began last year and is fast on its way to becoming a New York City tradition.
Summer in the city resounds with music, especially in Brooklyn. The 25th Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Concert Series, at Wingate Park in Central Brooklyn, kicks off with old school stars MC Hammer, Doug E Fresh, Slick Rick, and MC Lyte on July 9. Three days later, the 29th Annual Seaside Summer Concert Series, at Asser Levy Park at West 5th Street and Surf Avenue in Brighton Beach, will open with the legendary Tommy James & The Shondells.
