BP MARKOWITZ UNVEILS SELECTION OF NOSTRAND CORRIDOR AS BROOKLYN’S FIRST BUS RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT PILOT

3:00 PM
THURSDAY, JANUARY 25, 2007
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL COMMUNITY ROOM
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT & ADAMS STREET
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

On Thursday, January 25, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, elected officials and Brooklyn community board members will join the multi-agency Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project team in unveiling a program designed to improve the speed, reliability, and attractiveness of bus service throughout the city.

Borough President Markowitz recommended Brooklyn’s Nostrand Avenue Corridor for the program, and is pleased that residents affected by slow bus service in neighborhoods far from subways will soon enjoy the benefits of service innovations.

“The BRT project will vastly improve travel to neighborhoods in Brooklyn underserved by public transportation,” said Borough President Markowitz, “and I hope this process, which encourages agencies to work together and reach out to the public, will advance a collaborative method for solving major transportation challenges as our borough and city grow in the days ahead.”

The BRT team representing New York City Transit, the NYC Department of Transportation, and the New York State Department of Transportation, has worked for two years on the project.

This briefing will be the first in a series of meetings on the BRT project in Brooklyn, and will give community members and elected officials the opportunity to learn more about the plan, make suggestions, and voice concerns.
