BP MARKOWITZ ENCOURAGES “FITNESS FOR LIFE” AT
SENIOR EXERCISE EXPO

BP PRESENT 8:30-9:00 A.M.
WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 28
AVIATOR SPORTS AND RECREATION CENTER
FLOYD BENNETT FIELD, HANGAR 5
BROOKLYN
On Wednesday, February 28, Borough President Marty Markowitz will kick off the first ever “Seniors in Shape – Fitness for Life” expo at the Aviator Sports and Recreation Center. The all-day event — which will feature exercise classes ranging from yoga to ballroom dance — is free to anyone older than 50. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet with representatives from various healthcare, financial, and safety companies for assistance on senior issues.
The event is organized by Susan Lavin, who has more than 20 years experience in senior programming, and who is working to make Aviator a regular destination for seniors to exercise and socialize. Because many senior centers lack the space for adequate fitness resources, Ms. Lavin is helping to set up regular organized weekly or monthly schedules for senior centers at the Aviator along with a designated bus route for seniors only.
Borough President Markowitz, who is sponsoring a breakfast and tour for senior center directors immediately preceding the expo, has long advocated the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Sine 2002, he has sponsored the annual “Lighten Up Brooklyn” borough-wide weight-loss and healthy-diet campaign. The Fitness for Life expo recognizes the significance of exercise specifically for the senior population, of great relevance given Brooklyn’s aging population.
For more details on the expo, the media may contact Susan Lavin at 347-752-0994 or 718-318-9271, as well as the Aviator’s Tom Wells and Maura Buckley at 718-758-9800.
