BP MARKOWITZ STATEMENT ON THE SALE OF
BROOKLYN’S STARRETT CITY

“It is our unrivaled economic and ethnic diversity that defines life in Brooklyn and New York City. Starrett City represents the very best work of city planners, public officials, and developers — and it has been nurtured over the years by caring tenants who have made it a beacon of affordable living in this city. Brooklyn is now in an affordable housing crisis, and we simply must not lose Starrett City. We must demand that the new owners do the right thing and preserve Starrett City’s affordability. We cannot let this become ‘Stuy Town, Part II.’

Along with my fellow public officials, the tenants association, and community groups, I look forward to working with the complex's new owners, Berkshire, LLC, and its principals, David Bistricer and Sam Levinson, to ensure that the nearly 6,000 apartments that comprise Starrett City remain affordable to Brooklynites of all income levels, and that this development continues to be the model for diverse, urban living in Brooklyn and America.”
