On December 4, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the Gold family in marking the 75th anniversary of Gold’s Pure Food Products Co., Inc. (manufacturers of the famous “Gold’s Horseradish”) at the apartment house on Coney Island Avenue in Flatbush where the company was founded.
In order to earn extra money for her family, Tillie Gold, a female entrepreneur way ahead of her time in 1932, came up with the idea of cleaning, cutting and grinding horseradish roots in her kitchen, before packaging them in the same jars in which Gold’s Horseradish is sold today. Along with husband Hyman and her sons, Tillie sold her unique product on the streets, and by delivering jars to grocery stores throughout the city by using the subway.
Today, Gold’s has grown into a manufacturer of some fifty condiment foods sold in supermarkets, groceries, delicatessens, convenience stores and food service operations.
