On Wednesday, September 13, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined
Council Member Vincent Gentile and Community Board 10 District Manager Josephine Beckman at 13th Avenue at 72nd Street for a “graffiti blitz” to remove unsightly vandalism and put a new shine on Bay Ridge.
Two graffiti removal trucks— purchased with $130,000 in capital budget funds allotted by Borough President Markowitz in 2003 — blasted graffiti from the side of a residential building and repainted the rolling shutter of a local business before clearing graffiti from 40 other sites in Bay Ridge.
Since joining with the Economic Development Corporation to launch the “Graffiti Free Brooklyn” initiative in 2002, the partnership has cleaned up more than 1,100 sites across the borough.
“This is a clear example of the good work that is done when neighbors work together with their elected officials,” said Borough President Markowitz. “All anyone needs to do is call and grant permission for us to clean, and at no cost we will clear graffiti and show these vandals that their creativity is best expressed in their own homes.”
To request graffiti removal, residents can call the Borough President’s Community Service Center at 718-802-3875.
