BP MARKOWITZ JOINS P.S. 238 STUDENTS TO COMMEND
“READ—DON’T FUGHEDDABOUDIT” LITERACY PROGRAM

9:00 A.M.
FRIDAY, OCTOBER 27
P.S. 238
1633 E. 8th STREET
BETWEEN AVENUE P & QUENTIN ROAD
MIDWOOD, BROOKLYN

On Friday, October 27, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join the parents, teachers, staff, and students of P.S. 238 at a school-wide assembly that will feature cheerleaders and a chorus as they celebrate the innovative “Read—Don’t Fugheddaboudit” program created by P.S. 238 Literacy Coach Florence Florio.

“Read—Don’t Fugheddaboudit” was born when Florio was leaving Brooklyn and saw one of the “Fugheddaboudit” road signs, posted by Borough President Markowitz, which bid motorists goodbye as they leave Brooklyn. The campaign began with fourth graders at P.S. 238, who when faced with extraneous details in math word problems or their own writing, were told to “Fugheddaboudit.” Process of elimination is a key component of the fourth grade curriculum, and the “Fugheddaboudit” mantra helps students stay on course by reminding them to focus on the facts and leave out unnecessary details.

The “Read—Don’t Fugheddaboudit” idea caught on at P.S. 238 and is helping students get excited about reading. P.S. 238’s “Brooklyn Bookworms”, who have each read the most books so far this school year, will be awarded certificates and have their names posted on the “Read—Don’t Fugheddaboudit” sign that hangs in P.S. 238. Borough President Markowitz is proud to join the students of P.S. 238 as they get on the road to becoming “Brooklyn Bookworms.”
