BP MARKOWITZ TO SHARE PERSONAL ACCOUNT OF “HOW TAKE YOUR MAN TO THE DOCTOR” WEEK IS A REAL LIFESAVER

On Thursday, October 5, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and his wife, Jamie, will announce Brooklyn’s 5th annual “Take Your Man to the Doctor” week by recounting their personal experience this summer when Borough President Markowitz had a health scare that took him to the emergency room. Borough President Markowitz and Jamie will be joined at the event by his cardiologist, Maimonides Chairman of Department of Medicine Dr. Edgar Lichstein.
The initiative is a call to action for men of all ages, ethnicities, and income levels to regularly visit a doctor , and for the women and men who lov e them to help make it happen. From October 16 to October 22, nine participating Brooklyn hospitals, clinics, and physicians throughout Brooklyn will offer free health screenings while p articipating Brooklyn YMCAs will offer free guest passes.
Borough President Markowitz and Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham will be joined at the event by participating “Take Your Man” partners including NYC De p artmen t of Health and Mental Hygiene Brookly n District Public Health Office D eputy D irector Christina Larkin , Continuum Health Partners, LICH and Beth Israel Kings Highway Division , D irector of Commu nity Affairs Brad Korn, K ingsbrook Jewish Medical Center Director of Community Affairs Harry Schiffman, MetroPlus Director of Intergovernmental Relations Vivian Storey , Central Brooklyn Medical Group M edical D irector Dr. Martin Valdes , and Central Brooklyn Medical Group President Dr. Leslie Kernisant.
Free health screenings will be held October 16, at Brooklyn Borough Hall from 11:00am to 2:00pm , October 18, at Atlantic Center mall from 4:00 to 8:00pm , October 19, at Kings Plaza 4:00-8:00pm11am-3pm, and October 22, at Gateway mall 11am-3pm.
Participating partners will perform free screenings for vision, glaucoma, prostate cancer, HIV, blood pressure, diabetes, nicotine replacement therapy, and stroke prevention blood pressure, asthma, cholesterol, glucose, dental and oral cancer, colorectal screening, depression, chemical dependency, pulmonary disease, smoking cessation, stress, stroke, weight control and obesity, and provide information on nutrition, and health insurance.
In July, Borough President Markowitz went home after a full day of meetings and appearances feeling what he described as a “stomach ache” in his chest. Instead of letting him lay on the sofa, his wife, Jamie, got on the phone with his personal doctor and rushed him to Maimonidies Medical Center where he underwent a stent procedure By listening to his wife and maintaining regular appointments with his doctor, Borough President Markowitz has built a relationship that is truly good for his health. “Take Your Man to the Doctor” week encourages men, and all those who love them, to do the same.
M ore than a dozen participating partners will join this year’s “ Take Your Man to the Doctor ” w eek including Interfaith Medical Center, Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, Pfizer, Affinity, Metro P lus, Bedford Stuyvesant Family Health Center, YMCA, Coney Island Hospital, Kings County Hospital, Lutheran Hospital, Fidelis, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene, SUNY Downstate, Central Brooklyn Medical Group, Beth Israel Kings Highway division/LICH, Brookdale Hospital, Woodhull Hospital and Brooklyn Hospital.
