BP MARKOWITZ CALLS ON BROOKLYN EMPLOYERS TO HIRE YOUTH FOR SUMMER HEAT

This year Borough President Marty Markowitz is calling on more Brooklyn employers to hire or sponsor qualified, pre-screened students for a summer of experience, and esteem building work. Borough President Markowitz’s Summer HEAT (Help Employ Ambitious Teens) is the summer youth-employment program that encourages Brooklyn businesses to invest in our young people through employment. Over the past four years, hundreds of young men and women between the ages of 16 and 18 have been hired by dozens of local businesses.

“What we need to see most right now is more Brooklyn employers stepping up to the plate and offering teens summer jobs, which is really about training Brooklyn’s future workforce” said Borough President Marty Markowitz.

Good work habits such as getting to work on time, dressing for success, and learning to start and complete projects and tasks are critical skills that Brooklyn teens need in order to become successful adults in the workforce. Brooklyn employers can provide our teens with these important early work experiences, while gaining an ambitious and eager-to-learn young worker.

Prospective employers can:
Hire one or more teens this summer for at least six weeks, at least 25 hours per week, at or above the minimum wage of $6.75 per hour.
Donate money to employ one or more teens at a local not-for-profit organization.
Contribute money or in-kind services to cover administrative expenses.

Interested employers should visit www.brooklyn-usa.org for program materials.
For additional information, please call 718-802-3762.
