BP MARKOWITZ TAKES TO THE STREETS TO "LIGHTEN UP BROOKLYN"

1:30 P.M.
SATURDAY, MAY 20
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL PLAZA
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT & ADAMS STREETS
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

On Saturday, May 20, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will jump-start his fifth annual borough-wide weight-loss initiative “Lighten Up Brooklyn.” This year’s campaign will take it to the streets and encourage Brooklynites to achieve and maintain a healthy weight, block by block. It’s easier getting by with a little help from friends, so Brooklyn block associations will unite to help neighbors and friends lighten up together this summer.

The block associations will not be alone in their efforts to get their neighbors moving, as more than a dozen fitness trainers from Brooklyn fitness clubs will be at Borough Hall to share workout tips and fitness routines for groups. The experts will offer free training sessions throughout the summer to block associations who want to get moving on their own blocks.

Borough President Markowitz will also be joined by the champions of the 2006 International Journal of Emergency Medical Services Games, Brooklyn paramedics Joseph Hudak, James Fallar and EMT Joe Fortis of FDNY/EMS, who will provide important information about summer safety and the benefits of group motivation in fitness.

Brooklyn’s front stoop will also play test-kitchen, with grilled turkey burgers available and farmers and merchants from the Borough Hall green market offer in dishes as a model for nutritious and delicious eating at block parties across the borough. As always Brooklyn will be block party central this summer, and Borough President Markowitz will kick it off Saturday as Brooklyn “Lightens Up” block by block.
