Douek, and Council Member David Yassky celebrate Jewish Heritage night at Borough Hall.

On Monday, May 8, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz hosted Brooklyn’s annual Jewish Heritage Celebration, with the theme “A Salute to Israel.” The flag of Israel flew over Borough Hall in honor of Brooklyn’s Jewish community.

Borough President Markowitz recognized members of Brooklyn’s Jewish community for their contributions to Brooklyn and beyond, including IBE Trade Corp. President Alex Rovt and his wife Olga, Leviev-Boymelgreen President Shaya Boymelgreen, UJA Federation of New York Russian Division Director Lilly Wajnberg, and the Hebrew Academy for Special Children.

“Brooklyn has the largest population of Sephardic, Orthodox, and Hasidic Jews outside of Israel,” said Borough President Markowitz. “Brooklyn is truly the Yiddishkeit capital of America.”

The Chassidic Art Institute presented an exhibition of paintings in honor of Jewish Heritage Month, and the Yeshiva of Flatbush High School Chamber Choir performed.
