BP MARKOWITZ AND SPEAKER QUINN TO CELEBRATE BROOKLYN LGBT PRIDE
6:30 P.M.
THURSDAY, JUNE 8
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL ROTUNDA
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT & ADAMS STREETS
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN
On Thursday, June 8, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join the weeklong Brooklyn Gay Pride celebration by honoring two individuals and an organization who have made strides to improve the lives of Brooklynites from all walks of life: City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Peter Fleming, and the Brooklyn Pride organization. Brooklyn is proud home to the city’s largest LGBT population and Borough President Markowitz will honor members of the community that share its passion for visibility, community service, and equality in Brooklyn and the world at large.
Christine Quinn, New York City Council Speaker, is a woman of many talents and historic firsts. She is the first woman and first openly gay person to ever hold the post of Council Speaker. In a career that has spanned nearly two decades, Speaker Quinn has been an outspoken gay-rights and tenants-rights activist, and she is now the second most powerful elected official in New York City.
Peter Fleming has been a political force in Brooklyn for over 20 years, lending his time and fundraising skills to countless campaigns as a member of Community Board 6 and an executive board member of Lambda Independent Democrats, Brooklyn’s LGBT political club. Mr. Fleming is known for sharing his time and talents and was honored by Lambda with the first Clyde Moss Service Award for his years of volunteer service, in 1998.
The Board of Directors and volunteers of Brooklyn Pride do more than throw a great party every June. Now celebrating their tenth year of service to the Brooklyn community, the organization continues to sponsor toy and food drives, and this year launched its first health fair. An all volunteer group, Brooklyn Pride is a valued resource that celebrates strength, diversity, and reaffirms the value of the borough’s LGBT community.
