On Monday, July 10, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz received a royal visit when Brooklyn beauty queen Staci Shands, who is representing New York in the Miss America International pageant, an Internet-based contest for women 40 to 79 years old, came to Borough Hall.
A beauty from Bensonhurst, Ms. Shands, who has diabetes, is using the pageant as a platform to spread awareness about the disease. In order to stay in the contest, Ms. Shands must attend events around the state and send photographic proof to the pageant organizers. The winner of the pageant will be announced in January 2007.
The website of the pageant organizer, Virtue International, can be found at: www.virtueinternationalpageants.com
