BOROUGH PRESIDENT MARKOWITZ HONORS PROMINENT BROOKLYNITES AT BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION

Announces Shirley Chisholm portrait commissioned for Borough Hall

Today, Borough President Marty Markowitz and Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham will host Borough Hall’s Black History Month celebration. Honorees at the annual event include Alpha School CEO Barry Addison, Black Leadership Commission on AIDS of NYC Executive Director Divinah “Dee” Bailey, NAACP Brooklyn Branch President Karen Boykin-Towns, and Brooklyn “Steppers” Marching Band Founder and Executive Director Tyrone Brown.

Borough President Markowitz will also announce that a portrait of civil rights pioneer Shirley Chisholm (1924-2005), the first African-American woman elected to Congress, has been commissioned for Borough Hall. Andre Branch of Diageo North America will present a $2,500 check to fund the portrait to Markowitz at the event.

In addition, a black history art exhibition entitled “Interpretations” is on display in Borough Hall’s Community Room Gallery through February 28.
