On Wednesday, February 15, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz and Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center hosted an interdenominational clergy breakfast at Borough Hall to raise awareness of youth violence issues and discuss strategies for prevention and intervention. Also present were Sharon and Errol Rose, the parents of 15-year-old Christopher Rose, who was murdered for his iPod near their East Flatbush home in July 2005.
“Because violence is a behavior that young people learn from such an early age, it is essential for community and religious leaders to make it a moral imperative to teach the lessons of respect, of understanding, and of celebrating our differences that are the foundation not only of our civilized society but of every major faith on earth,” said Borough President Markowitz. “Our lessons are simple: when someone disses you on the street or in the classroom, you don’t make a fist, and you don’t reach for a gun.”
