BP MARKOWITZ TO START THE NEW YEAR WITH A BANG AT 25TH ANNUAL GRAND ARMY PLAZA FIREWORKS DISPLAY

11:00 PM
SUNDAY, DECEMBER 31, 2006
GRAND ARMY PLAZA
PROSPECT PARK

On Sunday, December 31, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will ring in the New Year with fireworks at midnight , live entertainment, and friends at Grand Army Plaza at Prospect Park. The 25th annual edition of the fireworks display promises to shine brighter than ever, as the pyrotechnics will be complemented by the ongoing public-lighting project “Prospect Park in Lights.”

The project consists of more than 600,000 lights adorning four of the park’s historic entrances, including the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch and the Bailey Fountain at Grand Army Plaza, Bartel-Pritchard Circle, Park Circle, and Parkside and Ocean Avenue. The lighting project, which runs through January 7, was created by noted Brooklyn designer Jim Conti and made possible in part by the Daily News.

The free New Year’s Eve festivities will be hosted by Borough President Markowitz and will feature live music by R&B band The Blacksmith Organization, hot drinks, baked goods, and a midnight fun run of 3.3 miles — one loop around Prospect Park — organized by the Brooklyn Road Runners Club.
