On Monday, December 11, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined the Korean Dry Cleaners Association (KDCA) for the eighth annual Winter Clothing Drive. This year more than 6,500 articles of unclaimed clothing collected by the KDCA and the Neighborhood Dry Cleaners Association are being donated to New York City’s Department of Homeless Services.
“This incredible bounty of coats, jackets, sweaters, pants, and hats is an example of extending a helping hand to our friends and neighbors in need,” said Borough President Markowitz. “Your generosity makes us proud to be Brooklynites and New Yorkers.”
Homeless Services Commissioner Robert Hess accepted the overcoats, jackets, sweaters, pants, and other clothing collected throughout Brooklyn and New York City. Donated clothing will be distributed to homeless shelters in Brooklyn and throughout New York City to help New York’s neediest residents stay warm this winter.
“Thanks to the Korean Dry Cleaners Association, the men, women and children experiencing homelessness will be warm this holiday season,” said Department of Homeless Services Commissioner Hess. “Thank you Borough President Markowitz for organizing this event each year and for giving so generously to the City’s most vulnerable New Yorkers.”
“I am happy to join my fellow dry cleaner owners as we give back to the community,” said Khim Shi-Young, KDCA Winter Clothing Drive Director. “No matter how small your organization is, there is always something you can do to help. During Christmas time and the onset of winter, it is especially important because people need clothing to stay warm and dry. We are incredibly pleased to be able to once again help out homeless New Yorkers during the holiday season.”
Borough President Markowitz presented Mr. Khim with an official proclamation naming the day in his honor douring his final clothing drive as Mr. Khim leaves the post of KDCA Winter Clothing Drive Director after 20-plus years of exemplary service to the borough of Brooklyn.
The clothing will be taken to three shelters in Brooklyn – the Atlantic Armory at 1322 Bedford Ave., the Barbara Kleinman Shelter at 300 Skillman Ave., and the Kingsborough 6 at 681 Clarkson Ave. Clothing will also be distributed to the 30th Street Men’s Shelter in Manhattan, as well as, other shelters run directly by the Department of Homeless Services.
