BOROUGH PRESIDENT’S OFFICE TO HONOR TEEN FIRE HERO

Courageous Brooklyn teen rescued five younger cousins from burning Flatbush house

10:00 A.M.
MONDAY, AUGUST 28
BROOKLYN BOROUGH HALL ROTUNDA
209 JORALEMON STREET
BETWEEN COURT & ADAMS STREETS
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN

On Monday, August 28, Deputy Brooklyn Borough President Yvonne Graham will be joined by the Harrison family of E. 52nd Street in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn to commend the brave actions of Yaneisha Harrison, 18, who in the early morning hours of August 21 rescued her five young cousins, ages 11 months to 11 years, from a tragic fire in the family home. Yaneisha, who moved to New York from Jamaica at age 9 and will be a senior at Samuel J. Tilden High School this fall, returned to the burning home five separate times to retrieve her cousins, who were trapped in different parts of the house.

Fortunately none of the family members were injured, but the first two floors of the family’s three-story home were gutted by the fire. As the school year approaches the family is currently living in a hotel and waiting for its insurance claim to be processed. Assembly Member Nick Perry will also be on hand to announce the establishing of a fund to help the Harrison family as they search for a temporary new home. This event will honor a true Brooklyn hero and issue a call to action for all New Yorkers to help this family put its world back together.
