BP MARKOWITZ KICKS OFF SMELL-EBRATION OF
BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN’S “CORPSE FLOWER”
NOON
THURSDAY, AUGUST 10
BROOKLYN BOTANIC GARDEN
1000 WASHINGTON AVENUE
AT MONTGOMERY STREET
BROOKLYN
On Thursday, August 10, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will join Brooklyn Botanic Garden President Scot Medbury for a once in a lifetime opportunity to see-and smell one of the world’s rarest plants, Amorphophallus titanum, also known as the titan arum or “corpse flower.”
The plant is commonly called the corpse flower due to the strong odor it emits to attract fly, beetle, and sweet bee pollinators. At nearly six feet tall, the plant, nicknamed “Baby,” has been nurtured by the staff of the garden for 10 years. The last time a corpse flower bloomed in New York was in 1939 in the Bronx. This historic blooming promises to be a unique treat for all the senses.
