On Tuesday, April 4, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Olympic beach volleyball gold medalists Misty May and Kerri Walsh to announce the AVP Brooklyn Open, the first-ever professional beach volleyball tournament to be held in Coney Island, August 17-20. This will mark the first time the Association of Volleyball Players will hold a tournament in New York City. Also attending were Department of Parks and Recreation Commissioner Adrian Benepe, New York City Sports Commissioner Ken Podziba, Council Member Domenic Recchia, Forest City Ratner President and CEO Bruce Ratner, and AVP Commissioner Leonard Armato.
“Coney Island is the most popular beach on the eastern seaboard, so with an AVP tournament coming here, volleyball has finally hit the big time,” said Borough President Markowitz. “It’s a match made in Brooklyn!”
The AVP will construct a temporary 4,000-seat stadium and 12 outer courts for the tournament, where more than 150 top professional beach volleyball athletes are expected to compete.
