On Wednesday, April 19, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz honored a group of volunteers from Grace Church in Brooklyn Heights as they prepared to depart for New Orleans on a relief mission to aid Gulf Coast victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Markowitz presented the group with Brooklyn pins to wear during the trip.

The Episcopal Diocese of Louisiana’s Office of Disaster Response assigns teams of volunteers from throughout the nation to work on projects in the affected areas. The volunteers from Grace Church will stay at St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church in Metairie, New Orleans, from Tuesday, April 25, until Saturday, April 29, and work on various projects including light demolition and cleanup for houses damaged by the hurricanes, food service and preparation, and building fellowship with community members.

Groups interested in volunteering with the Diocese of Louisiana can contact volunteer coordinator Holly Heine at 225-387-5141 x215 or visit www.edola.org/odr_main.php
