MARKOWITZ HONORS ADVOCATES FOR DISABILITY RIGHTS
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month

On Friday, October 21, Borough President Marty Markowitz and the Borough President’s Committee on Disability Issues will honor individuals, businesses and organizations committed to providing opportunities and helping the disabled community succeed in the work place. This event celebrates the 15th Anniversary of the Signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Borough President Markowitz will honor the following individuals for their advocacy work: Carmen Aquilone, board president of Mercy Home; Kermit Augustine of Parent Advocate; Kelly Marie Clark, pioneer in the self-advocacy movement; Calvin Fischetti, president of the Guild for Exceptional Children; Era and Calvin Fischetti, parent advocates for people with developmental disabilities and their families; Ellen Leibowitz, Arts & Craft volunteer at the Park Slope Senior Center; and Anthony Trocchia, an activist for disability rights.
Businesses to be honored include: ARIMED Orthotics, Prosthetics & Pedorthics, Jones Lang LaSalle, Metropolitan Food Services, Active Transport, Babies-R-Us of the Gateway Mall, New York Methodist Hospital, Pathmark Corporation of Atlantic Center Mall, the Staplex Company and Target Corporation of the Atlantic Center Mall.
Organizations to be honored include: Boro Park YM-YWHA, Brooklyn Special Olympics, Kings County District Attorney’s Office, Rainbow Heights Club, and Self-Advocacy Association of New York State.
