“As the Brooklyn chairman of the Loyal League of the Yiddish Sons of Erin, and its only member, it gives me great pleasure to welcome my Irish brothers and sisters to city hall — the city of Brooklyn,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty O’Markowitz. “Once again this year we are proudly flying the Irish flag over Brooklyn’s City Hall. I want to thank Al O'Hagan and Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes for co-hosting our St. Patrick's Day celebration —as we make the rest of New York City and America green with envy. From politics to sports to movies, so many of the greatest Brooklynites over the last century and a half hailed from Ireland or traced their ancestral roots there.”
On Thursday, March 17, O’Markowitz, Hynes and O’Hagan of Brooklyn’s Baile na nGael “Home of the Irish,” hosted the 3 rd annual Brooklyn St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast at Borough Hall. Commodore John Barry, father of the American Navy and great Irish-born Revolutionary War hero, was honored. Young dancers from the O’Malley Irish Dance Academy performed traditional Irish step dancing. Members of New York City Fire Department’s Pipe Band filled the room with the beautiful sound of bagpipes, and Colleen Queen 2004 Mary O’Regan sang the Irish national anthem in Gaelic. In honor of St. Patrick, Borough President O’Markowitz served his world famous green bagels.
