On July 18 Brooklyn Borough President made a visit to Junior’s world-renowned cheesecake emporium to help arrange a surprise celebration in honor of Mary Blevins who is retiring after four decades behind the counter. Soon after Markowitz ordered his usual breakfast fare at the round counter near the entrance, owners Walter and Alan Rosen came out with balloons and cake.

Although born and returning to Bristol, Virginia, Blevins will continue to claim her status as an honorary Brooklynite. “I salute and commend Mary Blevins, who is so much the essence of a Brooklyn “character” that it’s hard to believe she wasn’t born here, but whose status as an honorary member of our borough will always remain intact no matter where she roams,” Markowitz said.

The Rosens gave Blevins the traditional retirement gift of a beautiful watch, while the borough president proclaimed the last 40 plus years “Mary Blevins Era in Brooklyn, U.S.A.”

After the celebration had quieted and the cake had been served, Blevins asked Markowitz, “Do you still want your eggs?”
