Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz served as one of Coney Islands’ seven judges for the Queen of Coney Island Contest held on Sunday, July 11. The event was the highlight of several activities over the weekend, organized to celebrate a reinvigorated Coney Island.

“We are going to keep the funkiness of Coney Island that we all love, but bring it to the 21st century,” Markowitz said. “Nowhere in America has more character or characters than Brooklyn, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

The contest springs from a long history of beauty contests on the Coney Island boardwalk, beginning at the turn of the twentieth century reaching a height of popularity during the 1920s.
