CORNER OF COURT STREET & REMSEN STREET
DOWNTOWN BROOKLYN
On Tuesday, December 27, Turkish Consul General Omer Onhon, representing a country with one of the world’s largest Muslim populations, Rabbi Aaron L. Raskin of Congregation B’nai Avraham, and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz will light the Rabbi Jacob J. Hecht Menorah. Standing about 25 feet tall, the menorah is one of the largest in Brooklyn. Thanks to Borough Hall’s new architectural lighting system, the façade of the building will also glow blue and white to celebrate the third night of Hanukkah.
For the first time, the Borough Hall lighting will also include Brooklyn’s own Latke Eating Competition. Marty will assist the judges of the contest. Three competitive eaters from the New York region will eat as many latkes as they can in three minutes. The contest winner will receive the Latke Eating Champion Trophy and an all-you-can-eat night out at Dougies BBQ & Grill, a kosher restaurant. The nine pounds of latkes used in the competition are from Benzi Food Products and will be cooked by Pastrami Box, a restaurant on Livingston Street.
Hundreds of Brooklyn families will enjoy performances by The Dovid Altein Band and the Yeshiva of Flatbush Choir. Rabbi Aaron L. Raskin of Congregation B’nai Avraham will lead the ceremony and kosher holiday treats will be served. Prizes and free menorahs will also be available.
This event is a collaboration between the Borough President, Congregation B’nai Avraham and the Chabad of Brooklyn Heights.
