MARKOWITZ URGES MTA AND TWU TO PUT THE PUBLIC FIRST

“On behalf of 2.6 million Brooklynites, who are the largest group of transit riders, I’m calling on MTA officials Peter Kalikow and Katherine Lapp and TWU leaders Roger Toussaint and Ed Watt to demonstrate responsible leadership and put the public they serve first. That means arrive at a fair contract and get it done before the deadline. Everyone wants to see the workers who move this city get a fair deal. Transit workers deserve respect and dignity for the vital services they provide.  The MTA must recognize that and negotiate in good faith within its realistic financial means. A strike would be a major inconvenience, hurt our children’s education, hinder our ability to respond to emergencies, and our entire economy would suffer, especially during this busy holiday season. The union can’t get everything it wants and the MTA can’t get everything it wants. Neither a strike by the workers or intransigence on the part of the MTA serves the public good. I am hopeful that the MTA and TWU can usher in a new era of partnership and respect, and that they will head in the right direction and quickly arrive at a fair deal.”
