More Than 90 Brooklyn Restaurants Participate in Week Long Event.

March 18th, 2004 (Brooklyn) -- Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz announced today the first ever “Dine In Brooklyn,” a Restaurant Week to begin on April 15th through April 22nd. Joined by sponsors MasterCard International, Brooklyn Brewery and Time Out New York Magazine as well as the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce (a partner in the initiative), supporters that include New York City College of Technology and the Brooklyn Restaurant Association and participating restaurateurs who presented appetizing signature recipes, the Borough President rolled out the economic initiative presented by the Brooklyn Tourism and Visitors Center, which opened in February of 2004. The initiative is a marketing campaign to promote restaurants across the Borough and attract visitors from throughout the city as well as tourists to Brooklyn.

“Brooklyn's restaurant scene is all the rage in New York City - our food is quality, quantity and value,” said Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz. “If you're into food, Brooklyn is the heartland!”

"This is a great opportunity for New Yorkers to sample Brooklyn's exciting restaurant scene," said Steve Hindy, president of Brooklyn Brewery. "Savvy New Yorkers already know that Brooklyn restaurants are a match for any in the world--and the value is unbeatable."

More than 90 Brooklyn restaurants have signed-on for restaurant week, and all have agreed to offer a prix fixe meal for $18.98. The fixed price was inspired by the year 1898 when Brooklyn joined New York City. The Borough President also wanted a price that is less
expensive than Manhattan’s pricey $30.04 for its restaurant week. The advertisement banner reads, “In 1898 we joined New York City…now we invite New York City to join us to dine in Brooklyn’s best restaurants for $18.98.” Restaurant Week patrons will receive a free Spirit of Brooklyn poster, while supplies last, when using a MasterCard, the preferred payment card of Dine In Brooklyn.

"Time Out New York is thrilled to partner with the Brooklyn Tourism & Visitors Center on the borough's first annual Restaurant Week,” said Marisa Fariña, Associate Publisher/Marketing for Time Out New York. Time Out New York is a huge supporter of the Brooklyn restaurant scene through the weekly magazine and the brand’s annual Eating & Drinking guide. This event is a perfect opportunity to sample different cuisines, neighborhoods, cultures and - for some - a different borough."

“Brooklyn’s inaugural Restaurant Week puts the Borough’s rich cultural diversity and culinary heritage on full display,” said Fred P. Gore, senior vice president, North America Acceptance, MasterCard International. “We are delighted to join with Borough President Markowitz and all of the participating restaurants to bring together such an exciting week for Brooklyn’s residents and visitors.”

“The vitality of the Brooklyn restaurant scene is a key ingredient in our borough's neighborhood and economic development,” said Ken Adams, President of the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. “This campaign will help us share the excitement, fun and value of these unique eateries with the rest of the region. Too bad it's only a week!”
