Today, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Governor George Pataki, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Medgar Evers President Dr. Edison O. Jackson at a groundbreaking ceremony for the college’s new Academic Complex I and Student Support Services Building.
Borough President Markowitz applauded the new additions to the college, and commended Medgar Evers President Dr. Edison Jackson for his exemplary record of service to the school and the Borough of Brooklyn.
“Now, not only will Brooklynites no longer have a reason to leave the borough to attend college, but more and more of our neighbors from the outer boroughs will be flocking to Brooklyn to get an excellent public education, and pick up on the Brooklyn attitude,” said Borough President Markowitz. “I want to congratulate Dr. Edison Jackson on this momentous occasion for Medgar Evers College, which he has steered toward its position as a flagship of the CUNY system during his nearly 15 years as President.”
Medgar Evers College’s Academic Complex I is the future home of the School of Science, Health and Technology. The Student Support Services building will house classroom, administrative and extra-curricular program space. Together the two buildings will allow the college to increase its enrollment by 41 percent, up to a level of approximately 7, 000 students, by 2008.
