On Friday, June 25, Brooklynite Victor Mooney will
begin rowing for 48 hours to raise awareness of HIV/AIDS and National
HIV Testing Day, which is Sunday, June 27. The rowing marathon simulates
Mooney’s planned February 2005 trans-Atlantic journey from
Goree, Senegal, in West Africa to Brooklyn to raise awareness about
HIV/AIDS. This Friday at Borough Hall, Mooney will alternate rowing
for two hours and resting for one hour, as he will do on the specially
designed rowboat he’s taking on the solo journey from Africa
to Brooklyn. The 8,000-mile route Mooney is taking will pay homage
to the millions of Africans slaves who were forced to make the journey
to America.
Mooney,
who works as a communications officer at the ASA College of Advanced
Technology in downtown Brooklyn, has been inspired to raise HIV/AIDS
awareness by the death of his brother and by the work of the late
New York City Cardinal John O’Connor. Anyone can assist Mooney’s
effort by donating $10 in exchange for having their name imprinted
on the side of the 24-foot rowboat. Further proceeds will also benefit
various AIDS organizations.
