Today,
Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Mayor Bloomberg, Department
of Housing, Preservation and Development Commissioner Shaun
Donovan and local elected officials at a press conference to
announce the creation of a community task force to oversee the
conversion of the Brig. The 104,600 square foot Brig, which
was originally a federal naval prison, will be demolished and
replaced by new homes, apartments, commercial and community
space.
“Brooklyn’s
growth continues, but to ensure a place for everyone in this
success story, we must create affordable housing,” said
Borough President Markowitz. “The formation of this task
force brings Brooklyn one step closer to realizing the community’s
vision by transforming the Brig site into housing affordable
to Brooklynites of every income level. I am confident that the
community working with its elected officials and the City will
unlock the Brig site potential, opening the door to an event
brighter future for this neighborhood.”
The Brig
conversion is a part of the Mayor’s New Housing Marketplace
program, which plans to build or rehabilitate 65,000 housing
units over the next decade. The Brig plan will create up to
400 new homes and apartments, as well as commercial and community
space in the area between Flushing and Park Avenues and Clermont
and Vanderbilt Streets.
