Today,
Borough President Marty Markowitz joined Brooklyn Botanic Garden
President Judith D. Zuk and Independence Community Foundation
Executive Director Marilyn Gelber in announcing E. 25th Street,
between Clarendon and Avenue D, in Flatbush as the winner of
the 10th Annual Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest. The winner
of the commercial category was the Association of the Atlantic
Avenue Local Development Corporation (AANY) for Atlantic Avenue,
between Nevins Street and Third Avenue, in Boerum Hill.
“The
Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest really celebrates every block
that competes. Because when a community comes together to make
its neighborhood more beautiful, it not only improves the quality
of life for its residents, it also creates that ‘Only
in Brooklyn’ spirit that comes from working together to
help all around you,” said Borough President Markowitz.
“And that’s the kind of garden that bears fruit
for generations to come.”
The
Greenest Block in Brooklyn contest is coordinated by the Brooklyn
Botanic Garden’s Brooklyn GreenBridge program with assistance
from the Borough President’s Office, and is sponsored
by Independence Community Foundation. This year’s program
set the record with 224 blocks registered and more than 110,000
Brooklyn residents and businesses participating.
