On Monday April 26th, Brooklyn Borough President
Marty Markowitz and the Brooklyn Jewish Heritage Committee hosted
Brooklyn Jewish Heritage Night: A Salute to Israel, at Brooklyn
Borough Hall. Each year Borough President Markowitz recognizes
the contributions and achievements of Jewish individuals in
every aspect of American culture.
“New
York City has the largest Jewish population in the world outside
of Israel, about a million. And Brooklyn has the largest Jewish
population in the city, almost half a million, twice as many
as Manhattan, making us the Jewish capital of America,”
said Borough President Markowitz. “Brooklyn has more than
its fair share of great Jews, and we will honor a few of them
tonight.”
This
year he honored Chaim Deutsch, President of the Flatbush Shomrim
Safety Patrol; David Glass, a Jewish war veteran; Douglas H.
Jablon, special assistant to the president and vice president
of Patient Relations at Maimonides Medical Center; and Miriam
Lubling, president and founder of Rivkah Laufer Bikur-Cholim.
Also,
as a part of the Borough of Brooklyn’s ongoing Jewish
Heritage commemoration, an exhibit entitled “The World
Around Me” is on display in the Community Room gallery
of Borough Hall. The exhibit is curated by the Jewish Association
for Services for the Aged (JASA), and is on display through
April.
