Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz calls for fair pay for New York City’s valued day care workers in a rally on the steps of City Hall.

On Thursday, April 1st, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz joined educators, parents, community leaders, legislators and union officials in a rally on the steps of City Hall to call for increased salaries for New York City’s 7,000 day care workers, the majority of whom either live or work in Brooklyn.

“Brooklyn cares about its day care workers,” said Borough President Markowitz. “Maintaining proper compensation for day care workers, who haven’t had a raise since 4 years ago today, means more than just improving the quality of life for you. It means fixing a system that encourages some to take far more than they need at the cost of others with mouths to feed.”

Day care workers have not had a raise since April 1, 2000, and are currently without a contract. They are among the lowest-paid city-funded workers. As a result, many day care workers are leaving to work in public schools and Head Start programs, creating a staffing crisis in the city’s day care centers.
