On June 19th, Borough President Marty Markowitz, with The Daily News and the Russian American Arts Foundation, hosted a celebration in honor of Russian Heritage Week.

“The number of Russian speaking Brooklynites has swelled in recent decades, and the culture, food, and customs of the former soviet block nations increasingly enliven Brooklyn neighborhoods each year,” Borough President Markowitz said. “During Russian heritage week, I am especially thrilled to be able to present the work of the great Russian born 20th century costume designer, sculptor, and graphic artist Erte. He was a creative force in so many different artistic arenas, and the same can be said of Brooklyn’s incredibly vibrant and dynamic Russian speaking community.”

Borough President Markowitz is also pleased to present a month-long exhibition by Russian born painter Romain de Tirtoff, known to the world as Erte. One of the foremost fashion and stage designers of the 20th century, Erte’s images are known to the world for their sense of elegance, lyricism and art deco geometry. This collection of Erte gouaches is on loan from Mark Schachner, a Brooklyn art collector, art dealer and owner of the Mill Basin Deli. The 29 works of art in the exhibition show the breadth of Erte’s creative career, which ranged from fashion illustration to Hollywood set design with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer.
