BROOKLYN MAKES A JOYFUL NOISE

A weeklong music festival featuring inspiring Brooklyn Gospel performers

Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz is pleased to announce Brooklyn Makes A Joyful Noise, a weeklong music festival with some of Brooklyn’s greatest Gospel talents performing at Brooklyn Borough Hall. This event is made possible by a grant from the Recording Academy’s fifth annual GRAMMY Fest and is also in celebration of Black History Month.

“Brooklyn is blessed to have so many incredibly talented gospel performers throughout our borough,” Borough President Markowitz said. “I congratulate The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir and the Love Fellowship Choir for their GRAMMY nominations this year – you’ve made Brooklyn so very proud. Brooklyn Makes A Joyful Noise is a great opportunity to enjoy Brooklyn gospel groups and artists singing their hearts out during free performances throughout the week at beautiful Borough Hall. You’re souls we’ll be sorry if you miss this unique GRAMMY Fest event!”

From February 18-21, warm your souls at our FREE Lunch Time Gospel Concerts from Noon-1:30pm in the Rotunda at Brooklyn Borough Hall. Featuring vocalist Linda Thompson all week with Silver Messengers on Tuesday, February 18, Thompkins Park Senior Gospel Choir on Wednesday, February 19, Blenman Gospel Chorus on Thursday, February 20 and Figueora Family Singers on Friday, February 21.

FREE Gospel Night at Borough Hall on Thursday, February 20 from 6:00-9:00pm. This very special evening produced with Hezekiah Walker and Flipside Entertainment features Hezekiah Walker and his GRAMMY Award winning Love Fellowship Choir with their invigorating fusion of hip hop and gospel. Two-time McDonald’s Gospelfest baritone soloist winner Gerard Placide and Lady Peachina and The Great Divas of Gospel will also be filling Borough Hall with a whole lot of gospel. Reginald Garner Jr. and CFC and Linda Thompson Williams round out this impressive bill.

The Borough Hall Community Room Gallery will have a unique exhibition, Crowning Glories, the church hats of Geneva Berrien, Shellie McDowell, Mary Robertson and Dolly Smith, along with other Brooklyn gospel memorabilia. It is FREE and open to the public from 9:00am – 6:00pm

GRAMMY Fest is a month-long celebration showcasing the vitality, quality and diversity of the New York cultural community in conjunction with the 45th Annual GRAMMY Awards. GRAMMY Fest invites cultural organizations that produce music or music-related events in New York to connect their February programs to GRAMMY Award activities. More than 50 events are scheduled for the month, including concerts, lectures, art exhibits, special film screenings and student performances. Borough President Markwoitz was happy to have helped bring this GRAMMY Fest event to Brooklyn.

The GRAMMY Awards will be held on February 23, 2003 at Madison Square Garden and broadcast on CBS. A complete listing of all GRAMMY Fest activities can be found on www.GRAMMY.com.
